Lloyd’s List’s efforts to broaden the geographic representation of the judging panel for this year’s Asia Awards were realised recently when a group of regional maritime leaders congregated in Singapore.
A notable participant at the gathering to evaluate entries and select this year’s winners was Xu Guibin, executive vice-chairman of China Shipowners’ Association, who travelled from Beijing to represent the CSA’s Council of Chairmen and members. Lloyd’s List hopes Mr Xu’s attendance marks the start of an era of closer collaboration between the event and the People’s Republic of China.
Yasushi Seto, manager of Class NK’s Business Department, travelled from Tokyo to represent judge Noboru Ueda, ClassNK’s chairman and president. While Peter Blackhurst, head of maritime safety services at Inmarsat Global, flew in from the UK to participate.
The trio were joined by Singapore Maritime Foundation executive director David Chin, Makoto Hashizume, general manager of liner trade management division of Singapore-based “K” Line; Marlon Rono, head of the human resources group for the Magsaysay Group of Companies; Johnson W. Sutjipto, the chairman of the Asian Shipowners’ Forum and chairman of the Federation of ASEAN Shipowners’ Association; Beng Tee Tan, group director, International Maritime Centre of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore; and Tim Wilkins, Intertanko’s regional manager for Asia-Pacific.
Hong Kong Shipowners’ Association managing director Arthur Bowring and Korean Register chairman and chief executive Kong-gyun Oh were unable to attend but submitted their views ahead of the meeting.
Nominations were sought from a broad range of categories to ensure that most areas of the maritime world have a chance to celebrate the achievements of the past year and the judges were charged with selecting those players who are clear leaders in their fields in Asia.
Yet the task did not stop there. In the wake of the global financial crisis a new business model for shipping appears to be emerging and it seems likely that many of the top global players in the maritime world will come from Asia. As such, the Lloyd’s List Asia Awards hope to acknowledge those regional players that can make a global impression, either today or going forward.
Furthermore, 2010 is the International Maritime Organization’s Year of the Seafarer and an important consideration for the judges was the safety and well-being of seafarers as they evaluated entries across many of the categories.
In the award category for assisted rescue at sea, the judges felt that in addition to recognising extraordinary courage and seamanship in a rescue operation of an individual vessel or crew, the award should also honour the countless other rescues that take place at sea each year but that largely go unnoticed.
One category that is not decided by the judging panel is Newsmaker of the Year, which is traditionally selected by the Lloyd’s List editorial team.
Last year, the Newsmaker of the Year Award went to Jasprit Chawla and Syam Chetan, the master and chief engineer of the Hebei Spirit. Known as the Hebei Two, the men were held in South Korea for 550 days following a legal dispute with South Korean authorities.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is always a popular category as it recognises an individual that has contributed to the well-being of the industry, over the course of his or her career. Last year’s winner was Chang Yun Chung, founder of Singapore-based Pacific International Lines.
“Lloyd’s List would like to thank the judges for the time and dedication they have given to selecting this year’s awards winners,” says Lloyd’s List editor Tom Leander.
“By drawing on their vast experience, we can ensure that the awards will go to those individuals and companies that truly strive for excellence across all disciplines of the maritime industry in Asia.”
The Lloyd’s List Asia Awards 2010 will take place on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Marina Mandarin Hotel, Singapore.
