The year 2011 was an eventful one for shipping. Many of the major trends played out in Asia. This is natural as Asia has fully grown into its role as the hub of world shipping since the onset of economic crisis of four years ago.
Asian shipyards took the lead in rush to build large container ships with energy efficient designs. Asian container lines felt the brunt of the rates war that marked much of 2011 in the container business, but several lines showed restraint and emerged from the fray with a market edge. The offshore business is booming and sustaining Asian shipyards. Liquefied natural gas demand has led to orders for new LNG carriers. Design innovation has grown in three of the great shipbuilding hubs: Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
The downside of the market hit Asia, as well, as many companies simply struggled to survive in a harsh rates environment.
Remarkable circumstances that influenced shipping last year in the opening months of 2012, making this year’s Lloyd’s List Awards fertile ground for industry leaders to affirm their contribution. The awards, which have been held in Asia for more than ten years, return to Singapore. As always, they seek to discover and celebrate the very best in maritime excellence, from innovation to safety to smart strategies in tough markets.
We urge you to enter in compete what is sure to be a rich field of competitors representing industry best practice in key areas of endeavour. The event will take place at the Raffles Convention Centre, Singapore, on Thursday 8 November 2012. Mark the date on your calendars and consider joining us at gala as well.
