Judges for the Lloyd’s List Global Awards have met in London and have established a shortlist of potential winners for this key maritime industry contest. The awards, to be held at London’s Dorchester Hotel on the evening of Wednesday September 29, provides a unique forum for all sectors of the maritime industry and its leading players to honour excellence and outstanding achievement in a difficult era for shipping, and amid an uncertain recovery.

The tenuous environment did nothing to discourage entries, which ranged from Libya to the United States and included first-rate companies from all the world’s major shipping centres. The high-calibre of the entries made the judges’ job especially demanding, but they met the task with gusto.

To evaluate the entries Lloyd’s List brought together one of the most illustrious international panels of judges that it has assembled for the event. Their participation ensured the highest standards of professionalism and independence in the judging process.

The judges, in alphabetical order, are Nicolas Fairfax (Lord Fairfax of Cameron), director of Sovcomflot and member of its executive board; Tetsuya Kinoshita, regional manager for Europe and Africa for ClassNK; Jan Kopernicki, a director of Shell International Trading and Shipping Co, head of Shell’s international shipping activities, and current president of the UK Chamber of Shipping; Ravi Kumar Mehrotra, founder and principal shareholder of Foresight Limited and the Foresight Group; Efthimios Mitropoulos, secretary-general of the IMO since 2004; Masamichi Morooka, representative director, senior managing corporate officer for Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and the effective head of NYK’s Tokyo-based technical and environmental division; Hamish Norton, managing director of Jeffries & Co and the head of its global maritime group; Irene Rosberg, director of the doctor of business administration at the Copenhagen Business School and director of the school’s executive MBA in shipping and logistics; Mohammed Sharaf, chief executive of DP World and chairman of Tejari World; and Maurice Storey, honorary chairman of Evergreen Marine (UK), a director of James Fisher and a former president of the UK Chamber of Shipping.

Nominations for an award were sought from all sectors of the industry. The awards cover each of the major shipping disciplines including innovation, training and education, best vessel, best master, corporate social responsibility, environmental protection, port operations, and classification.

Special awards will be made in association with Amver, the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System and with the Nautical Institute for Shipmaster of the Year. While the Newsmaker of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards will command particular attention.

A new award has been added in recognition of this difficult and remarkable period in shipping. A Company of the Year Award will go to that shipping firm that best adapted to the challenging conditions of 2009 by trimming costs, proving nimble in negotiations with partners and generally finding creative solutions to prepare the business for a more robust market.

The Lloyd’s List Global Awards provide the industry with a benchmark of excellence in the major disciplines of shipping, and provide companies that fight to raise standards in their own corner of the industry a chance to receive recognition for their good work.

Fittingly, because this year marks the International Maritime Organization’s Year of the Seafarer, several of the awards will recognise outstanding achievement by teams and individuals at sea. The Amver-Assisted Rescue at Sea Award recognises a vessel’s crew that showed extraordinary courage and seamanship in a rescue operation.

The Newsmaker of the Year Award has been granted to shipping executives and crew alike, depending solely on the influence they brought to bear on events which shaped the industry in a given year.

Newsmakers of the Year at Lloyd’s List’s awards in the past have included figures varying from master Jasprit Chawla and chief officer Syam Chetan – also known as the Hebei Two – of the Hebei Spirit and Mohammed Souri, chief executive of the National Iranian Tanker Co.

“We’re pleased that our distinguished panel of judges have made their selections,” said Fotini Liontou, chief executive of the Lloyd’s List Group. She added, “Lloyd’s List has long been dedicated to supporting excellence in all the disciplines that drive the commercial maritime industry. This year’s competition highlights the industry’s strength in the face of a challenging environment. Appropriately, in the Year of the Seafarer, the awards will underscore seafarers’ extraordinary contribution to the health and vibrancy of global trade.”
