The Port de Barcelona is the main transport and services infrastructure located in Catalonia (Spain), but its area of influence stretches through the Iberian Peninsula, the south and centre of Europe and North Africa. It is the leading hub port in the Mediterranean (with regular services with the main ports in the region) and a logistics gateway that links markets as distant as the Far East and Latin America. Its more than 100 shipping lines, operated by 163 ship owners, regularly connecting Barcelona with 850 ports in the five continents, set it apart as the top Spanish port for international traffics.
The Port is an infrastructure essential to the Catalan economy and indeed to Spain as a whole: it represents 71% of Catalonia's foreign maritime trade and 21% of the total for Spain. During 2010, the Port de Barcelona handled EUR 50 billion worth of goods. The Port’s evolution in the cruise sector has been outstanding: it receives more than 2,4 million passengers per year. Barcelona has become the top cruiser port in Europe and it ranks fourth worldwide.
